Physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians work in conjunction with Clinton Hospital's Rehabilitation Department to develop treatment plans for patients suffering from pain, for whom traditional medication was not successful or who are not candidates for surgical procedures. Patients are typically referred to a physiatrist by their primary care physicians to help diagnose mobility or pain issues and prescribe a plan of care through a combination of physical, occupational and speech therapies, as well as medication management and injection therapies.
Physiatrists use rehabilitative therapies to treat physical issues such as:
- Neck and back pain
- Stroke recovery
- Fibromyalgia
- Adult developmental disabilities
- Muscle spasms/spasticity
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) spasticity
